Raw Fossil Energy

What exactly does "displacing fossil fuel energy" mean?

Sorry, I'm just really confused by the use of "displacing". Does it mean that the fossil fuel energy is transferred or something? If yes, then how? Help would be gladly appreciated. :D

2. There's one use of the word "displace" which seems to apply, although it strikes me as being a fairly horrible usage. Normally, it would mean 'to move something or other out of position'. However, it can also mean 'remove'. In this case, I'd imagine it means the use of fossil fuel being replaced by the use of some other fuel although, it should be born in mind, I'm not aware of the context the quotation comes from.
